Fuji's new cameras: 18x zoom, blog-mode, Panorama

The advanced FinePix S100FS (Film Simulation) digital camera provides an all-in-one solution with manual controls and functionality of a Digital-SLR, including both digital and manual stabilization through a mechanically stabilized "floating" lens element to reduce blur from the photographer's hand-shake, with Fujifilm's Picture Stabilization Technology, to reduce blur caused by subject movement.

The S100FS also features a 14.3x Fujinon manual zoom lens, an 8th generation Super CCD sensor with 11MP of resolution, a 2.5" tiltable LCD and ISO speeds up to ISO 6400 at 6MP and up to ISO 10,000 at 3MP. Bolstered by Fuji's Face Detection 2.0 Technology with Automatic Red Eye Removal, the camera's lens design can achieve maximum resolution at all focal lengths of 28mm-400mm equivalent and all aperture stop settings, according to the company.

Camera makers vie for SLR buyers' attention

Camera manufacturers including Canon, Pentax, and Fujifilm will show new digital SLRs for professional photographers at the PMA07 show in Las Vegas next month. The new models balance traditional and advanced features to retain existing customers and tempt new ones.

Canon will show the EOS-1D Mark III Digital SLR, an upgrade of its classic 1D model that shoots 10.1 megapixel images at up to 10 frames per second. Canon developed a more sensitive image sensor for the camera that can be pushed to ISO 6400, it said Thursday.

Fujifilm, meanwhile, will show the FinePix S5 Pro, which begins shipping this month. The digital SLR has a 12.34 megapixel image sensor: half the pixels respond best to low light levels, the other half to stronger light, a system that captures images with a wider dynamic range, the company said.

C.U. Republicans Call for New Gun Policy

In the wake of last week's tragedy at Northern Illinois University and last April's massacre at Virginia Tech, the seemingly endless series of school shootings has incited debate over the safety of college communities across the country.

Yesterday, the Cornell College Republicans placed about 20 signs on the Arts Quad that publicized their stance on the increasingly polarizing issue of the concealed carry of weapons. They have joined the approximately 12,000 students nationwide who are part of a grassroots effort that is advocating for concealed weapons license holders to be able to carry their weapons on campuses.

Although prevalent on the Arts Quad during the morning hours, the removal of many of the signs by the afternoon conveyed a sense of disapproval from some members of the Cornell community who support the University's “gun-free zone" policy.

Led Zeppelin plays one-night gig in London

LONDON, Dec. 11 The surviving members of Led Zeppelin made a triumphant return to the stage, playing a one-night-only gig in London Monday night.
More than 1 million fans attempted to secure tickets to the concert and some 18,000 were able to actually see the show, which was part of an event honoring the late Atlantic Records founder and producer Ahmet Ertegun.
The band's set list included "Good Times Bad Times," "Ramble On," "Black Dog," "In My Time Of Dying," "For Your Life," "Trampled Under Foot," "Nobody's Fault But Mine," "No Quarter," "Since I have Been Loving You," "Dazed and Confused," "Stairway To Heaven," "The Song Remains The Same," "Misty Mountain Hop," "Kashmir," "Whole Lotta Love" and "Rock And Roll," the BBC reported Tuesday.
The concert, which garnered generally great reviews, marked the first time the band played a full set together since 1980, Entertainment Weekly noted.

Entries for January 2008

Forget the holidays. It's Sunday's Super Bowl that drives the most sales of HDTVs. The big game will have moved about 2.4 million high-definition sets into homes, according to research from an electronics trade group.

Perhaps more interesting, nearly half of viewers will use a PC or cellphone to check stats on the Internet, says the survey by the Consumer Electronics Association. That helps justify TV makers who are adding Web connections to their sets.

The problem is that TVs themselves are already too complicated. About 20 percent of people buying HDTVs don't get a high-def signal but think they do, according to another survey by Leichtman Research Group. They'll actually be watching the bowl in standard definition, which can sometimes look worse on a HDTV than it does on the old tube.
